OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators signed veteran forward Scott Gomez to a one-year, US$575,000 contract Wednesday.

Gomez, 36, began the season with the St. Louis Blues, registering a goal and seven assists in 21 games before being released. He signed a professional tryout in January with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, recording four goals and 20 assists in 18 games before exercising his release Tuesday.

The five-foot-11, 200-pound Gomez is a 15-year NHL veteran, having played for the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers and St. Louis. He has 181 goals and 574 assists in 1,066 career regular-season games and won two Stanley Cups with New Jersey (2000, ’03).

The Devils took Gomez in the first round, No. 27 overall, in the ’98 NHL draft.
