Senators’ Smith fined $2,000 for diving/embellishment

Senators forward Zack Smith now has a lighter wallet, to the tune of $2,000, after the league felt he embellished this hold by Lightning star Steven Stamkos.

Ottawa Senators forward Zack Smith has been fined $2,000 for embellishing a call in a Dec. 10 game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The play came at 9:28 of the first period, when Smith drew a holding call against Lightning centre Steven Stamkos.

This is the second time Smith has been singled out under Rule 64 which allows one warning citation before punishing players, and eventually their coaches for diving and/or embellishment.

Smith’s first warning came from an incident on Nov. 12 against the Vancouver Canucks.

Smith is the second player this year to receive a fine under Rule 64, with Teemu Pulkkinen of the Detroit Red Wings being the other.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
