Senators use trio of quick goals to defeat Sabres

Evander Kane scored twice but the Ottawa Senators held on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Max McCormick, Alex Chiasson and Zack Stortini scored in 3:26 span in the second period to help the visiting Ottawa Senators beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 in exhibition play Wednesday night.

Mika Zibanejad and Ryan Dzingel also scored for Ottawa.

"I think it was a team win, every line chipped in," said McCormick. "We played the right way defensively, that’s where it starts. We all played hard together and had a good team win."

Matt O’Connor stopped all 18 shots he faced in the first 29:26. Chris Driedger made 22 saves the rest of the way, allowing only Evander Kane’s two third-period goals. Kane had short-handed and power-play goals.

"It was a good experience for me, coming on the road and being in a different environment," said O’Connor, a rookie who spent the last three seasons with Boston University. "I think we had a good start to the game and the boys made it easy for me out there.

"I think we kept the energy right to the buzzer."

Ottawa’s Robin Lehner made 16 saves on 19 shots in the first two periods. Andrey Makarov stopped five shots in the third.
