The New York Islanders acquired the rights to pending unrestricted free agent defenceman Dan Boyle Thursday from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Should Boyle choose to re-sign with the Islanders, the draft pick will become a fourth-rounder.

Boyle finished the 2013-14 season with 36 points in 75 games.

The 37-year-old had been with the Sharks since 2008. Boyle won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning and broke into the league with the Florida Panthers in the 1998-99 season.
