The Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks swapped defencemen Friday afternoon.
The Stars acquired Jason Demers and a third-round pick from the Sharks in exchange for Brenden Dillon.
Dillon inked a one-year contract worth $1.25 million with Dallas on Oct. 2.
Demers was paired with Marc-Edouard Vlasic for the bulk of his minutes in 2013-14, which helped him set a career highs in assists (29) and points (34). The 26-year-old was paired mostly with Scott Hannan this season. He will help provide the Stars with some much-needed puck-moving ability on the back end.
Demers has one more year beyond this season remaining on his contract, which sees him come in at a cap hit of $3.4 million.
Dillon, 24, is known more his physical presence and brings an upgrade in size at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds. The Stars have struggled in their own end early on this season and sit 27th overall in goals-against per game with a 3.35 mark.
The Stars sent veteran defenceman Sergei Gonchar to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Travis Moen on Nov. 11.
