It wasn’t until one of the referees got close to the dek hockey goaltender’s mask that he realized it was one of the world’s greatest ice hockey forwards playing goal.

Finding himself with extra time on his hands, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby donned goaltending gear and participated in a dek hockey game Friday at Dek Star, a rink in Ohio Township next to Interstate 279, reports The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Photos on Twitter showed Crosby dressed in goaltender gear, earning a 4-0 shutout no less.

And after an informal on-ice practice Monday at Southpointe, Crosby confirmed that he sneaked his way into a friend’s game.

“My buddy plays in the league there. I talked to him about playing,” Crosby told the paper. “I played a lot of goalie in street hockey growing up and stuff. Just asked if he needed a goalie. He said sure and I came out. It was cool.”

Due to his equipment, the NHLPA’s most recognizable face was kept secret for almost the entirety of the contest.

“I had all the (goaltending) gear on,” Crosby said Monday. “I was talking to the ref once toward the end of the game and I think he recognized me.”

“My referee walked over just to kind of say, ‘Hey, you’re not the normal goalie. It’s about time they get a goalie.’” Chris Evans, general manager of Dek Star, told the Gazette. “Instead, he looked at him and he was like, ‘Holy (cow) that’s Sidney Crosby.’ “

For those worried about injury, Crosby said the risk was low. Even lower when all of the game’s shots on goal were added up.

“I didn’t have one shot. My team was really good defensively,” Crosby said.

Friday’s stunt was not the first time Crosby has strapped on the big pads.
