No NHL team has won the Stanley Cup in three consecutive years since the New York Islanders of the early ’80s.
Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins think they can be next.
“We’re going to training camp with that in mind,” Crosby told NHL.com’s Dan Rosen. “It’ll be a big challenge, but why not?”
Crosby was in Halifax for his birthday celebrations (“The Kid” turned 30 on Monday), and as Rosen points out, none of Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, or Bobby Orr won the Cup past the age of 29.
But the Penguins captain is coming off perhaps his most accomplished season yet, having won a World Cup title last September, along with tournament MVP honours, before winning his second Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Conn Smythe Trophies.
Turning 30 doesn’t scare the three-time Cup champion.
“It’s just a number,” said Crosby. “Just a number to me.”
