Not all hockey fan traditions are created equal.
Detroit Red Wings faithful have become synonymous with hurling octipi onto the ice in the post-season, while Florida Panthers fans opt to toss rubber rats. For fans of the Nashville Predators, it’s all about catfish.
It’s not uncommon to see the ray-finned bottom feeders land on the ice at Bridgestone Arena, which is exactly what happened when playoff hockey returned to Tennessee Tuesday night as the Predators hosted the Anaheim Ducks.
A group of Predators fans strapped three catfish to their backs ahead of Game 3 and smuggled them into Bridgestone Arena with plans to toss them onto the ice.
They were successful.
The catfish, which weighed between 12 to 18 pounds each, were thrown onto the playing surface prior to puck drop in carefully orchestrated mission titled “Operation: Fat Cat.” We’re not kidding.
Predators fans Wes Collins, Austin Casselman, Jonathan Hardin, and Luke Alger detailed the operation’s plans and execution in a YouTube video:
The Mike Fisher sweaters are a brilliant touch.
The fellas weren’t worried about the scent of the fish giving them away.
“I was more worried about the bulkiness in the back [of the jersey]. You kinda gotta be strategic how you stand to make the shirt fluff out,” Collins told WKRN.
You do you, Predators fans.
