Song first Chinese player selected at NHL Draft

He dominated the rinks in his home country China, moved to Canada to find better competition and now is honoured to be the first Chinese-born hockey player drafted in the NHL Draft, a huge moment for his place of birth.

History was made Saturday at the NHL Draft when Beijing prospect Andong Song became the first Chinese player ever selected to the National Hockey League.

The 18-year-old Song, who moved to Oakville, Ont., at age 10, was chosen by the New York Islanders in the sixth round (172nd overall).

The Islanders are part-owned by the Chinese-born Charles Wang.

Song began playing hockey at age six. He has been attending Lawrenceville School in New Jersey since age 15 and plans to play in the NCAA.

Song captained China at the 2015 U-18 world junior championships (D-II). He also led the Beijing team to victory in the 2006 Bell Capital Cup.
