Sportsnet NHL Awards: Funniest Highlight

Claude Giroux. Jonathan Hayward/CP

While the NHL will hand out its share of awards at the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Sportsnet’s NHL web team decided to hand out some awards of our own.

While we’re handing out awards for the funniest highlight it’s important to remember that comedy is subjective. With that said, let’s have a look at some of the 2014-15 season’s funniest plays, mishaps, and candid moments.

Winner: Claude Giroux wipes boogers on a referee

Subtle, disgusting, and childish.

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux takes the award for his not-so sneaky method of clearing his nostrils and depositing some fresh snot on the back of an official.

Giroux is a dirty man.

Funniest Highlight of the Year Runners-up

Jakub Voracek uses Johnny Gaudreau as a prop

Gaudreau planned on setting his stick on fire as part of the NHL’s All-Star Skills Competition, which would have won our ‘Hot-Fire of the Year Award’ by a landslide.

With the NHL extinguishing the rookie’s plan to douse his blade in gasoline, he still got in on the funny side of things as a prop in Voracek’s breakaway challenge attempt.

Subban’s Stone Cold stunner

Why is P.K. Subban one of the NHL’s greatest personalities? Because Stone Cold said so, and that’s the bottom line.

Tomas Jurco’s botched breakaway

If you’re at a loss in trying to find an explanation as to what happened to Tomas Jurco on this breakaway fail, please consult this handsome and hilarious man on Twitter:

(Actual explanation: he tripped on the puck)

Linesman sings along to Journey

Veteran NHL linesman Lonnie Cameron would have been 17 years old when Journey’s hit “Don’t Stop Believin'” was released.

If Cameron spent his formative years belting out the lyrics in the back of a van or in a basement, well… it shows. Cameron joined in on a rendition at the Air Canada Centre during a game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs in March.

Never change, Lonnie Cameron.
