Report: Stamkos ‘close’ to deal with Bolts

Steven Stamkos believes he is close to a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

“I think it’s close,” Stamkos told the Times of a new deal. “I don’t think it’s far off. As close as we are, it’s not something I’m really worried about.”

Stamkos also said he believes his agents will meet with Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman at this weekend’s Entry Draft.

The 21-year old forward, who is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, was drafted by the Lightning first overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

“Tampa is a great organization,” Stamkos also stated. “With the success we had this year, there are only going to be bigger and better things.
“You want to be part of that. Whatever happens happens, but I have confidence things are going to get done well before (July 1).”

It is speculated that the deal would be worth around $7 million a season.

Stamkos had 91 points in 82 games last season. He also tallied 13 points in 18 games as the Lightning reached the Eastern Conference finals.
