Hull interested in Stars, but are others?

A report in Monday’s Dallas Observer says Mike Modano, Brett Hull and Wayne Gretzky have formed a group which is in negotiations to purchase the NHL’s Stars.

Owner Tom Hicks has had the Stars on the market for a while now and a pair of sources told the paper that the trio is interested in buying the team.

“It’s nothing formal, as if they’re about to sign on the dotted line,” a source explained to the paper. “But it’s gone past kicking the tires. This could happen.”

According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, it is Hull that is the main impetus behind the interest in the team. He has been pursuing the team for more than a year and while Gretzky is not directly involved, sources say he is “willing to listen.”

However, the Dallas Morning News reports that the rumour may just be that as a blog on the paper’s web site said that Modano was reached by Stars PR before practice Monday and he said, “I haven’t spoken to Gretzky about any possible ownership situation. I don’t know anything about this.”

Further, the paper asked Hull if he was putting together a group last week and Hull shot down the idea.
