Streit, Isles contract talks stall

The New York Islanders and captain Mark Streit have reportedly failed to agree on a contract extension in advance of the deadline.

NHL fans could see another captain part ways with his club in the near future.

With less than 24 hours before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline, the New York Islanders have failed to come to terms with their captain, Mark Streit, on a contract extension, according to ESPNNewYork.com’s Katie Strang.

The two sides have reportedly been holding contract discussions for over a month now.

Defenceman Streit is on the last season of a five-year deal that pays him $4.1 million annually. The 35-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

According to Strang’s report, Isles GM Garth Snow has indicated to Streit that he will not be traded, although that could change.

Streit is believed to be negotiating for a multi-year contract and could command that on the open market.

The Isles signed another veteran defenceman, Lubomir Visnovsky, to a two-year, $9.5 million extension on Friday.

Currently ninth place in the East, one point behind the rival Rangers, the Islanders find themselves in the thick of a playoff race.

Streit, who has 16 points in 36 games this season, hasn’t participated in the postseason since he left the Montreal Canadiens and signed with the Isles in the summer of 2008.
