Team Canada will soon name head coach for World Cup

Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman discuss all the top stories around the NHL including if the slow starts for the Ducks and Blue Jackets have put their coaches on the hot seat.

Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday’s Headlines segment that Canada’s team for the upcoming World Cup tournament could name its head coach within a month’s time.

Edmonton Oilers coach Todd McLellan was named Friday as the bench boss for the North American (or under-23) squad. The 48-year-old McLellan won gold at the 2015 World Championship, coaching young stars like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, whom he now oversees on a young Oilers team.

Possible candidates for Canada’s coaching job are Mike Babcock, Joel Quenneville and Alain Vigneault.

John Tortorella, former coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks, was chosen to lead Team USA while former Oilers coach Ralph Krueger will man Team Europe’s bench.
