The Toronto Maple Leafs honoured Toronto FC’s MLS Cup victory on Sunday night and star-forward Jozy Altidore was caught a little too much in the moment during the ceremonial faceoff.
After the ritual puck drop, Altidore, standing in the middle of a packed Air Canada Centre, was too focused on his phone to notice the outstretched hand of Leo Komarov.
While it looked for a second that the MLS Cup hero was going to leave the feisty Finn/Russian hanging, Altidore did eventually shake Komarov’s hand, albeit without moving his eyes from his phone.
After the game, Altidore took to Twitter to apologize for what could have been perceived as disrespect.
“Hey, Komarov,” his tweet reads. “Just wanted to apologize and let you know I was caught up in the moment at [centre] ice trying to show all of Toronto and the Toronto FC fans how amazing it was being there. Congrats on the win! Best of luck to you and the Maple Leafs this season!”
Even the best of us get star struck, sometimes.
