The Leafs acquired van Riemsdyk in the summer in a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers for defenceman Luke Schenn.
In 43 games last season, the American forward scored 11 goals with 13 assists and a minus-1 rating.
In other Leafs news, the team placed forwards Keith Aucoin, Ryan Hamilton, Greg Scott and recently-acquired defenceman Mike Mottau on waivers.
