It has become a New Year’s Day tradition for many hockey fans across North America to sit back, relax and take in some outdoor hockey action. For the past five years the annual NHL Winter Classic has been a hit, unfortunately 2013 didn’t start that way.
Had there not been this extended NHL lockout, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings would ring in the New Year by playing a regular season game in front of over 100,000 people at Michigan Stadium.
The hockey world was abuzz on Twitter with tweets of what could have been. Some funny, some matter of fact, some with a sense of disappointment. Even the Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio, gave his two cents!
With that, here are some tweets from hockey insiders, players, celebrities and fans on the 2013 Winter Classic that never happened:

NHL and NHLPA should be straight up embarrassed that the Winter Classic isn’t being played today. Disgusted by its absence. — Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) January 1, 2013

Instead of watching an actual Winter Classic today, the NHL asks that fans stand out in the cold & watch a road hockey game two blocks away. — Adam Proteau (@Proteautype) January 1, 2013
