Wayne Gretzky headlines Blues’ Heritage Classic alumni game roster

Scott Oake sits down with Wayne Gretzky and Dale Hawerchuk as the Oilers and Jets prepare to face off at the Heritage Classic.

Wayne Gretzky is coming out of retirement…again…sort of.

After saying that he wouldn’t play another outdoor game following the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg, the Great One and his No. 99 were found on the St. Louis Blues‘ alumni game roster when it was announced Thursday night.

Gretzky was among 27 players announced to play for St. Louis in the alumni game. Hall of Famers Bernie Federko, Brett Hull, Al MacInnis, Adam Oates, Chris Pronger and Peter Stastny are among some of the other big names that will suit up.

The alumni game between the Blues and Chicago Blackhawks is scheduled for Dec. 31 at Busch Stadium. The NHL game will be played on Jan. 2.

Gretzky, who played 18 games for St. Louis in 1995-96, didn’t play like his old self in the Heritage Classic alumni game between the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers in late October and was the first to admit it.

Martin Brodeur is one of four goalies that will be between the pipes for the Blues.

Blues legends Red Berenson, Bobby Plager, Brian Sutter and Gary Unger will be behind the St. Louis bench as head coaches.

Both the Blackhawks and Blues revealed what their jerseys for the matchup would look like on Wednesday.
