Gretzky not joining NHL team anytime soon

NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky joins Prime Time Sports to talk about reuniting the ’84 Edmonton Oilers and much more.

Wayne Gretzky doesn’t see himself getting involved with the NHL team or any of its teams in an official capacity anytime soon.

“People always say to me, ‘are you ever going to get back into hockey?’ but I just don’t see it right now,” Gretzky told Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Tuesday. “I’m really enjoying what I do. There’s not a lot of stress and pressure … I’m a fan now and it’s really enjoyable.”

Gretzky did say he’s more than willing to lend a hand and give advice to the NHL or individual teams if they ask.

“Everything I have in my life is because of hockey and the National Hockey League, so I love it and I still enjoy it but right now I’m just not directly involved with any particular team.”

Tuesday marked the 35th anniversary of Gretzky’s first career NHL goal, which is an accomplishment The Great One looks back upon proudly. In a Hockey Hall of Fame Q&A, Gretzky ranked his first NHL goal as one of the top five most memorable goals of his career. Gretzky, who ended up with an NHL record 894 career goals, finished a three-way passing play with Brett Callighen and Blair MacDonald as he buried a backhand past Vancouver Canucks netminder Glen Hanlon to tie the score at 4-4.

This isn’t the only anniversary Gretzky has celebrated of late either. Over the weekend, Gretzky and his former teammates from the 1984 Stanley Cup-winning Oilers gathered in Edmonton for a reunion that he described as “pretty remarkable.”

“It was good to see players that we haven’t seen in a long time… Guys that maybe you stay a little bit in touch with but don’t get the chance to see.”
