TORONTO — Toronto Maple Leafs centre Kyle Wellwood could miss the beginning of the season with a sports hernia.
As first reported by Sportsnet, the 24-year-old underwent a minor procedure to correct the injury Saturday, the team announced in a release. Wellwood is officially listed as being out indefinitely but will reportedly miss the next three to four weeks.
Wellwood missed 34 games last season with groin-related injuries. Still, the five-foot-10, 180-pounder finished the season with 12 goals and 30 assists.
He played in the first game of the pre-season against Edmonton on Tuesday.
He has 23 goals and 64 assists in 130 career NHL games.
