Russia stymies QMJHL in Super Series finale

Russia earned an early 3-0 lead and managed to just hold on against Team QMJHL as they won Game 6 and sealed their Subway Super Series victory.

RIMOUSKI, Que. — Igor Shestyorkin made 25 saves as Russia held off a team of Quebec Major Junior Hockey League all-stars for a 3-2 win on Thursday in the final game of the Super Series.

Vyacheslav Leshchenko gave the Russians a 3-0 lead at the 9:33 mark of the second period. Ivan Fishchenko and Vladimir Bryukvin also had goals for Russia.

Nicolas Meloche and Anthony DeLuca scored 5:20 apart in the third period to bring the QMJHL to within a goal of their European opponents. Philippe Desrosiers stopped 18 shots for Quebec.

Shestyorkin only faced one shot in the second period, but was bombarded with 14 in the third.

Russia went 0 for 3 on the power play, while the QMJHL went 1 for 4 with the man advantage.

The Russians went 4-2-0 in the six-game series against all-star teams from Canada’s three major junior leagues.
