MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens, who were looking to boost their defence and power play, have acquired defenceman Mathieu Schneider in a trade with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Full terms of the deal were not immediately released, but the Canadiens have reportedly sent second- and third-round draft picks to the Thrashers for the 39-year-old.

Schneider began his career with Montreal from 1989-90 to 1994-95 and played on the Canadiens' last Stanley Cup team in 1993.

He has since played for the New York Islanders, Toronto, the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, Detroit, Anaheim and Atlanta.

He has four goals and 11 assists in 44 games this season.
