WHL roundup: Cougars hold on to top Winterhawks

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Josh Anderson’s goal at 11:38 of the third period held up as the winner as the Prince George Cougars held off the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Aaron Boyd and Jesse Gabrielle scored in the first period to give Prince George (14-9-2) an early 2-0 lead and Anderson’s goal put the Cougars ahead by three.

Paul Bittner, on a power play, and Keoni Texeira, at 19:27 of the third, scored to bring Portland (12-12-0) to within a goal.

Ty Edmonds made 31 saves for the victory. Adin Hill stopped 35 shots in the losing effort.

Prince George was 0 for 5 on the power play while the Winterhawks scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

BLAZERS 5 ICE 1

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Matt Needham scored two goals and assisted on another as the Blazers topped Kootenay.

Gage Quinney had a goal and two helpers for Kamloops (12-9-3), Matt Revel and Ryan Rehill also scored and Deven Sideroff chipped in with three assists.

Cale Fleury had the lone goal for the Ice (6-20-2), who have dropped four straight and eight of their last 10.

ROYALS 3 TIGERS 1

VICTORIA — Matthew Phillips broke a 1-1 tie in the third period and the Royals went on to beat Medicine Hat.

Jack Walker and Chaz Reddekopp also scored for Victoria (18-8-2).

Cole Sanford scored for the Tigers (7-14-3), who have lost four in a row.
