Team Canada came out of the gate noticeably flat versus Team Europe in the first period of Game 2 of the World Cup of Hockey final.
Europe jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but if Canada has any extra pep in its step the rest of the way, Don Cherry believes it may be result of captain Sidney Crosby‘s involvement in a skirmish to end the first period.
Crosby was tied up with Team Europe defenceman Roman Josi as the first came to a close. All skaters on the ice became involved and Crosby earned himself a tap on the shoulder from teammate Drew Doughty before the teams headed for the dressing rooms.
“This is exactly what we needed,” Cherry said during Coach’s Corner in the first intermission. “You think Crosby isn’t a smart guy…he knew we were fast asleep, he manufactured this.
“The guy [Josi] just pushed him. He [Crosby] knows…he did this to get us going. Watch Doughty come in and tap him. Everybody knows what he’s doing. He’s the smartest guy, not only is he the best player.”
Crosby entered Game 2 of the final as the leader in World Cup of Hockey scoring with three goals and nine points in six games.
Team Canada can end the tournament with a win Thursday night, having taken Game 1 by a final score of 3-1. If they lose, Game 3 will be Saturday night.
