Tomas Plekanec to captain Team Czech Republic at World Cup

Tomas Plekanec has been named captain of Team Czech Republic’s World Cup of Hockey entry, the Czech Ice Hockey Association announced Monday morning.

This will be the forward’s fourth time wearing the “C” on the international stage, as he captained his country’s Olympic hockey team at the Sochi Games in 2014 as well as at the IIHF World Championship in 2012 and 2016.

Plekanec has spent his entire NHL career to date with the Montreal Canadiens, where he has served as alternate captain for the last two seasons. The 33-year-old centreman tallied 14 goals and 40 assists in 82 games in 2015-16, and has registered a total of 216 goals and 337 assists in 843 career NHL regular season games in Montreal.

The World Cup of Hockey runs from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1 in Toronto.
