Sportsnet.ca -- The first mixed martial arts event to appear live in prime-time on network television has gotten more star content.
Mixed martial artist and star of the new American Gladiators Gina Carano will resume her fighting career when she takes on Kaitlin Young on EliteXC’s May 31 show, the first in a deal for the promotion with CBS.
EliteXC’s parent company ProElite made the official announcement on Wednesday, according to MMAonTap.com.
Carano is by far the most well-known female fighter in terms of mainstream coverage. She is undefeated in five career fights, but hasn’t fought since a submission win over Tonya Evinger in September.
The event, a landmark for televised mixed martial arts, will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and will be headlined by internet streetfighting sensation Kevin Ferguson, a.k.a. Kimbo Slice, with his opponent to be named later. Middleweight champion Robbie Lawler will also be in action, defending his belt against Scott Smith.
