UFC 91 was billed as the 'biggest fight in UFC history," but it may go down as one of the best events the organization has ever held.
Nine fights were on the card, eight ended before the final bell, and the one bout that went the distance was the fight of the night.
In the main event, Brock Lesnar proved that the future is now, becoming the UFC heavyweight champion in just his fourth mixed martial arts fight.
With one right hand Lesnar silenced the crowd, dropping Randy Couture after connecting just behind his ear.
Couture's equilibrium was shaken and as he dropped to the mat, Lesnar proceeded to pummel the fallen champ with a barrage of hammer fists, prompting referee Mario Yamasaki to stop the bout at 3:07 of the second round.
When asked how it felt to be the new champion, Lesnar said: "It sounds really good, I can't believe it."
Gracious in victory, Lesnar was grateful for the opportunity for a shot at the title.
"I want to thank the UFC but especially Randy Couture for coming back and fighting me. It’s not easy after being away for 15 months to fight a big guy like me."
While Lesnar was booed by the crowd in attendance, he was asked if he believes the fans will ever support him, considering he is now officially a force to be reckoned with.
"I believe in hard work and it pays off," he said. "I'm not trying to come off as a cocky sob. To be honest, it’s just confidence," referring to his extensive fight preparation and incredible punching power.
Couture said he prepared for Lesnar’s power during training, but the one variable he could not prepare for was Lesnar's "85-inch reach."
To summarize the loss, Couture echoed the sentiments of those who had him as the underdog in this bout.
"He's a big sob," he said. "That's pretty much it."
Although he was away from the Octagon for 15 months, Couture does not agree with those who predicted he would be rusty.
"There was no ring rust," he said. "I've been helping guys prepare for their bouts while I was away. He caught me with a big shot and finished the fight like he was supposed to."
While Couture will now have to contemplate what the future holds in store for his already hall of fame career, Lesnar eagerly awaits the winner of the Dec. 27th interim-heavyweight championship bout between Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. When asked if he had a preference, Lesnar made it crystal clear.
"It's safe to say I want a rematch with Frank Mir," he said.
