UFC president Dana White has confirmed UFC 100 will take place in Las Vegas in July and will likely be headlined by welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
White told Montreal sports radio station CKAC 730 on Sunday what was previously reported, that the historic event, which is expected to be jam-packed with big fights, will see their local hero make his return to defend his title.
Yahoo! Sports had reported the show will take place on July 11 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The UFC has not held any events there since July 2008, likely due to its lower attendance capacity of 11,000. Instead it has put on its major cards at the 13,000-seat MGM Grand and its smaller ones at the Pearl at the Palms.
White has still not said who St. Pierre will be fighting. It has been hinted his next opponent will be No. 1 welterweight contender Thiago Alves and this is the likely matchup for UFC 100. But a rematch against B.J. Penn, whom St. Pierre defeated on Jan. 31 but whose result has since been clouded by controversy over the apparent illegal use of Vaseline by St. Pierre’s camp, still isn’t out of the question.
It had been rumoured that UFC 100 would feature championship bouts for all five of the organization’s weight classes, but White indicated that won’t be the case.
NOTES: According to MMAjunkie.com, featherweight Rafael Assuncao has signed with the WEC. … Bantamweight fighter Will Ribeiro, who was hospitalized in serious condition on Dec. 16 following a motorcycle accident in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has come out of a coma and is doing well, MMAonTap.com reports.
