SAN DIEGO -- The mixed martial arts fighter known as War Machine has been sentenced to a year in jail for violating probation after he assaulted people at two San Diego bars.

The former UFC welterweight, who legally changed his name from Jon Koppenhaver, pleaded guilty Thursday to two felony counts of assault and to violating probation in a previous assault case.

He has a fight scheduled for July 9 and was ordered to surrender for jail a week later.

"Drinking vodka and watching Shaun of the Dead with my sweetie," the fighter tweeted Friday. "Dreading the day I go to jail...what a boring waste of time. Guess I'm stuck in this pussy modern world so I'll have to find a way to live in it so I won't ever have to go back to jail."

The 28-year-old is a former cast member of Season 6 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and went 1-1 in the UFC before being released.

Prosecutors say the fighter knocked away some bottles and glasses on a bar, cutting a bartender. He also got into a scuffle and punched a security guard.

His lawyer says an acquaintance started one of the fights but War Machine failed to stop it.

His MMA record is 11-3.
