Four months after their Fight of the Night performance at UFC 205, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and top contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson are rolling it back.
The two stars fought to a majority draw at Madison Square Garden in November and their rematch will headline UFC 209 in Las Vegas on March 4, the UFC announced this week.
If the belt changes hands, we’ll see a special guest in the cage.
Thompson has become good friends with Toronto Blue Jays star Josh Donaldson. The two hung out and even trained together in Toronto ahead of last month’s UFC 206 and they’ll join forces again in March.
In fact, Donaldson will be in the Octagon to wrap the championship belt around Thompson’s waist if he’s victorious against Woodley.
“We’ve already talked to Dana White, he’s already made plans to be down there March 4 and he’s going to be the one putting that belt around my waist,” Thompson told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “[Donaldson] is a tremendous athlete,” Thompson added. “Some of the things that we were doing, I would show advanced guys. Hook kicks. Spin-hook kicks and he was throwing. He sent me a video the other day throwing some spin kicks to his buddy. I’m like, ‘What? Why aren’t you fighting, man?'”
A lightweight bout between lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is being targeted for the co-main event but no official announcement has been made.
