Two former UFC superstars are set to lock horns in the Bellator MMA cage.
Three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen and former light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz will be featured in the main event of Bellator 170 Jan. 21 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., the promotion announced this week.
Sonnen (29-14-1) signed with Bellator in September following a brief retirement and a two-year suspension for failing a 2014 drug test. His last fight was a TKO loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 167 in November 2013. The 39-year-old holds notable wins over current UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, former 205-pound champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and came within two minutes of beating Anderson Silva for the 185-pound title in 2010.
Ortiz (18-12-1) joined Bellator in 2013 after more than 15 years in the UFC. The 41-year-old submitted Bellator’s then-middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko in a non-title fight in his promotional debut. He followed that up with a win over fellow UFC alumnus Stephan Bonnar before losing to current light-heavyweight kingpin Liam McGeary last September.
No other fights have been added to the card to date.
