Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem are set to meet in a battle between two of the top three heavyweight contenders in the UFC.
The proposed matchup has not yet been confirmed by the UFC but according to multiple reports, including one from FloCombat, the fight will take place at UFC 213 on July 8.
It’s currently the only bout rumoured for the card, which will go down in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Overeem (42-15, 1 NC) is riding high after a knockout victory over Mark Hunt at UFC 209 earlier this month, while Werdum (21-6-1) earned a unanimous decision win over Travis Browne at UFC 203 in September. Those fights saw both Overeem and Werdum bounce back from 2016 knockout losses to current champion Stipe Miocic. The winner of this upcoming matchup will in all likelihood be positioned to take another stab at the title.
If this fight comes to fruition it will be the third time Overeem and Werdum have fought one another. Werdum submitted Overeem with a kimura back in 2006 when they competed in Pride. In 2011, Overeem avenged that loss in Strikeforce with a bizarre unanimous decision win over Werdum in a fight that saw Werdum repeatedly pull guard and refuse to engage Overeem on the feet.
