A tilt between flyweight contenders Henry Cejudo and Sergio Pettis is in the works for UFC 218, according to a report from MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.
Cejudo (11-2) earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his second-round TKO of Wilson Reis at UFC 215 earlier this month, while Pettis (16-2) has won four in a row all by unanimous decision. Cejudo is currently the No. 2-ranked contender in the UFC’s lightest men’s division and Pettis sits at No. 4.
Demetrious Johnson’s flyweight title defence against Ray Borg was moved to UFC 216 after Borg fell ill the week of UFC 215. Johnson has the opportunity to set a new UFC record for consecutive title defences—he is currently tied with Anderson Silva at 10 consecutive title defences—but it’s unclear whether or not he will stick around in the 125-pound division if he beats Borg.
If Johnson, hypothetically, decides against moving up to bantamweight then the winner of Cejudo-Pettis could potentially be in line for a title shot. Johnson finished Cejudo in the opening round of their UFC 197 fight; Pettis is one of the few flyweight contenders Johnson has yet to face in the UFC.
UFC 218 is set to place Dec. 2 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. No main event has been announced.
