Ovince Saint Preux made quick work of Yushin Okami in the featured bout of a UFC Fight Night event Saturday morning at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
Saint Preux was originally scheduled to meet former light-heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua but the Brazilian withdrew from the event last week with an undisclosed injury.
Okami, who typically competes at middleweight, returned to the UFC after several years competing in other promotions. The 36-year-old spent eight years in the UFC before signing with World Series of Fighting in 2013. The Kanagawa, Japan native fought Anderson Silva for the UFC’s 185-pound title in 2011 and earned notable wins over Nate Marquardt, Mark Munoz, Alan Belcher, Hector Lombard and the late Evan Tanner in his first stint in the UFC.
Saint Preux capitalized on a failed Okami takedown attempt and quickly worked to secure a Von Flue choke. Okami did not tap, went unconscious and the referee stepped in.
It marked the third time Saint Preux has won via Von Flue choke in the UFC. No other fighter has more than one Von Flue choke victory in the organization’s history.
In the co-main event, Brazil’s Jessica Andrade earned a one-sided unanimous decision victory over countrywoman Claudia Gadelha. The tilt earned both strawweights a Fight of the Night bonus.
Also on the main card, kickboxing star Gökhan Saki made his UFC debut and earned a massive first-round knockout win over Henrique da Silva.
Welterweights Daichi Abe kicked off the preliminary card with a unanimous decision victory over Hyun Gyu Lim. Abe dropped Lim with a massive right hand to seal the third round.
In other action, Shinsho Anzai ended a two-year layoff to snap Luke Jumeau’s seven-fight winning streak, Dong Hyun Kim TKO’d Japanese MMA legend Takanori Gomi 90 seconds into their lightweight scrap, and flyweight contender Jussier Formiga submitted Ulka Sasaki.
