Alexander Gustafsson will headline an event in his native Sweden for the second consecutive year, as he will fight former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi in a five-round main event on April 6, the UFC announced Saturday.
Gustafsson (15-1) beat former UFC champ Mauricio Rua in December and prior to that defeated Thiago Silva in front of a record crowd at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden last April.
Mousasi (33-3-2) is coming off a submission win over Mike Kyle earlier this month at the final Strikeforce event. The 27-year-old is also a former Dream middleweight championship and will be making his UFC debut. He has notable wins over Hector Lombard, Ronaldo Souza and Mark Hunt.
“Sweden is an incredible market for the UFC and we’re excited to once again bring a major UFC card to the Ericsson Globe Arena,” UFC executive vice-president and managing director Garry Cook said in a press release.
“Alexander Gustafsson is a big star in Sweden and has quickly grown in popularity worldwide thanks to his success in the Octagon. We know the fans in Sweden will make the Ericsson Globe Arena an absolutely electric atmosphere as he takes on the very talented Gegard Mousasi on April 6.”
The winner of this matchup could potentially earn a title shot, as both men are two of the highest ranked light-heavyweights in MMA.
