A bout between former UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton (Rampage) Jackson and boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. is in the works for a pay-per-view event later this year, according to a report from MMAJunkie.
“We’ve been talking to Roy and his people over a potential Rampage vs. Roy fight for over seven months,” a member of Jackson’s Wolfslair MMA team, told MMAjunkie.com under the condition of anonymity.
“If it happens, it would be an incredible fight. Boxing and MMA have both been discussed, and (Bellator MMA’s CEO) Bjorn (Rebney) has been in these discussions every step of the way. I can’t say much more than that. We’ll see what happens.”
Jackson, 35, is currently under contract with Bellator MMA after signing a a multi-year deal with Bellator MMA, Spike TV and the professional wrestling promotion TNA Wrestling in June.
Jones Jr., 44, has frequently talked about his desire to box Anderson Silva and the former UFC middleweight champion reciprocated that desire, though nothing ever materialized.
Details of what weight class Jackson and Jones Jr. would compete in, plus where and when the fight would take place have yet to be determined.
Jackson, who became one of the biggest stars in MMA, has a record of 32-11 and had been in the UFC since 2007 after the organization acquired his rights from the now-defunct World Fighting Alliance.
Jones Jr. has a professional boxing record of 56–8 and is the current UBO Intercontinental Cruiserweight champion. He last fought on June 30, 2012 where he won a split decision over Pawel Glazewski.
