A man has been charged in the stabbing death of Alberta mixed martial artist Wyatt Lewis.
According to the Calgary Herald, police arrested and charged James Rajbhandari, 26, with second-degree murder after the 37-year-old Lewis was killed shortly after 3 a.m. on Sept. 1.
Reports say that Lewis, a trainer at a Lethbridge, Alta., gym who was considered an MMA pioneer in Alberta, was trying to protect an unconscious friend at a building in Calgary when he was fatally attacked. Another man was also stabbed but survived.
“In the year 2000, it was almost unheard of that people were doing MMA, and Wyatt was one of the original crew doing this,” UFC middleweight Nick Ring said.
Lewis last competed in 2008 but continued to teach and promote the sport in Western Canada.
Rajbhandari, who is from Calgary, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
