Dubreuil just misses podium

KEARNS, Utah -- Quebec City's Laurent Dubreuil was the top Canadian at the World Cup long-track event at the Utah Olympic Oval on Sunday, finishing fourth in the men's 500-metre race.
Dubreuil finished in 34.66 seconds. Russia's Dmitry Lobkov won gold in 34.54, Japan's Keiichiro Nagashima (34.57) took silver and American Tucker Fredericks was third in 34.60.
"It was a perfect race," said Dubreuil after his first World Cup event. "The start was really good -- by far my fastest start ever. Fourth (place) is really amazing."
Edmonton's Jamie Gregg was 13th in a time of 13.79, while Calgary's Gilmore Junio was 17th in 35.16.
Later, American Shani Davis won his second gold in as many days, claiming the men's 1,000-metre title.
Davis finished in 1:07.69 seconds to edge Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands (1:07.94). Finland's Pekka Koskela (1:08.17.4) took the bronze.
Denny Morrison of Fort St. John, B.C., was fourth with a time of 1:08.20.5.
The Dutch finished 1-2 in the women's 1,000 metres, with Laurine van Riessen edging teammate Marrit Leenstra. Germany's Monique Angermuller won bronze.
Christine Nesbitt of London, Ont., who had won every 1,000-metre event so far this season, chose not to race Sunday with the World Sprint Championships in Calgary set for next weekend.
Earlier Sunday, Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea won her second straight gold in the women's 500 in 37.27. China's Yu Jing, China took silver in 37.51 and Germany's Jenny Wolf (37.62) was third.
