COLORADO SPINGS, Colo. — The Canadian junior women’s national basketball squad claimed silver at the U-18 FIBA Americas tournament on Sunday after falling to the host United States 104-74.
The second-place finish qualifies Canada for the 2015 U-19 FIBA world championship in Russia.
"The girls battled unbelievably hard and we couldn’t be prouder of their performance," said head coach Rich Chambers. "Hopefully, the team enjoyed their experience and I am very proud of how we represented Canada at FIBA Americas."
Shay Colley of Brampton, Ont., led Canada in scoring with 16 points while Daneesha Provo of Dartmouth, N.S. scored 12 points and added a team-high six assists.
American A’Ja Wilson had a game-high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
"I’m really proud of the team. Where we started and where we got to is awesome," said Christina Buttenham, who chipped in 11 points for the Canadian side.
Canada’s best showing at the U-19 women’s world championship was a fourth place finish in 2009.
