SANTIAGO, Chile — Canada’s Marc Deschenes came away with top honours in the under 100 kilogram category at the Judo Pan-American Open on Sunday.
Deschenes, ranked 171st in the international standings in his weight class, won all four of his bouts by way of ippon. He defeated Yeison Donoso of Chile, Manuel Bueno of Uruguay, Brazilian Joao Gabriel Schlittler, and Mexico’s Sergio Garcia.
Canadian Zachary Burt, meanwhile, placed third in the under 81 kg class by defeating Chile’s Rodrigo Idro.
Burt, the 95th ranked judoka in his weight class, lost just one match on the day. After beating Alain Aprahamian of Uruguay by an ippon, he lost by a yuko in overtime by Chile’s Fernando Salazar in the semifinal.
Canada’s Robert Edward finished seventh in the under 90 kg category.
