PORTO-VECCHIO, France — Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin won the individual time trial to take the overall lead in the Criterium International cycling race on Saturday.
Dumoulin completed the seven-kilometre (4.3-mile) time trial around Porto-Vecchio in 9 minutes, 7 seconds. The Giant-Shimano rider was three seconds ahead of Rohan Dennis of Australia and 10 seconds clear of Bob Jungels of Luxembourg, who were also second and third in the standings.
"Finally, after lots of close calls and second places, it’s great to get a win," Dumoulin told his team’s website. "I went full gas from the off and did a good ride, nailed all the corners and had good power on the fast sections."
Brothers Frank and Andy Schleck performed poorly in the time trial. Frank, who won the race in 2011, finished 30 seconds behind Dumoulin in 25th place. His brother Andy, the 2010 Tour de France winner, came in 46 seconds off the pace.
Nacer Bouhanni won the day’s first stage, an 89-kilometre (55-mile) trek around Porto-Vecchio, in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 1 second.
The French rider beat Nathan Haas of Australia and Marko Kump of Slovenia to take the bunch sprint. Alessandro Vanotti escaped but was reeled in two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the finish line.
The two-day race ends on Sunday with a 176-kilometre (109-mile) trek from Porto-Vecchio to Col de l’Ospedale.
"Tomorrow is going to be hard for sure," Dumoulin said, "but I am in good shape and feel strong, so I will give it my all on the climbs with the guys and see how we finish."
