AIGLE, Switzerland — The International Cycling Union says it will ask French officials to open a disciplinary case against Sylvain Georges after his backup sample also tested positive for a banned stimulant.
The UCI says the second test confirmed the presence of Heptaminol in a urine sample Georges gave after the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia.
The 28-year-old AG2R La Mondiale rider was withdrawn from the Giro last Wednesday after the first positive test was reported.
Heptaminol is considered a specified substance, which allows athletes the chance to prove they did not intend to enhance their performance. Bans for such substances are often shorter.
