While the NHL lockout caused the cancellation of the 2013 Winter Classic, Michigan will still play host to an outdoor game.
The Harlem Globetrotters announced Tuesday that they will step off the hardwood and onto ice to play an outdoor basketball game on Jan. 7.
“We hope the NHL can return to the ice as quickly as possible,” Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider said. “But in the meantime, we thought the Globetrotters could help fill the void of professional sporting events on an ice surface. And it’s only fitting we play this outdoor game in Michigan, as our tour continues in Kalamazoo the next day.”
The Globetrotters will play wearing “ice cleats” and helmets at the Global Select on The Ice Rink at Millennium Park in Portage, Mich.
