TORONTO — Two-time Olympian Sandra Levy will serve as chef de mission for the Canadian team at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Levy played on the national women’s field hockey team at the 1988 Seoul Games and the 1992 Barcelona Games. She won silver at the 1991 Pan Am Games in Havana and bronze at the 1987 Pan Am Games in Indianapolis.

As chef de mission, Levy will be the Canadian team’s representative and spokesperson. Other duties include hosting dignitaries, officials and sponsors, handling media availabilities and supporting the athletes.

“The Youth Olympic Games is centred on sport, culture and education so the chef de mission who guides our young athletes through the Games will play a crucial role in the shaping of our future Olympians and, ultimately, the leaders of tomorrow,” Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut said Thursday in a release.

“Sandra has the passion, the experience and the inherent understanding necessary to excel in this vital position and we are delighted that she will be leading our young athletes through Nanjing 2014.”

Levy, who spent 11 years with the field hockey program, also served as a member of the mission team during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.

“This is an amazing opportunity to share what I’ve learned in sport and in life with some of the most promising young athletes from across our great country,” Levy said. “It is also a chance to give back to the sport community that has helped to make me the person I am today. I can’t wait to get started.”

The Aug. 16-28 Youth Olympic Games will include 28 different sports.
