Two Canadians earn podium finishes at U.S. GP

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Brittany MacLean of Toronto and two-time Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane of Victoria produced podium performances on Thursday to open the last stop on the U.S. Grand Prix swimming circuit.

MacLean won silver in the women’s 1500-metre freestyle, clocking in in 16 minutes and 10.26 seconds. Lotte Friis of Denmark took the gold medal in 16:00.35 seconds, and Becca Mann of the United States was third in 16:15.01. The event was a timed final with Friis and Mann in the first heat while MacLean placed first in the second heat with the second fastest time overall.

In the men’s 800-m freestyle, Michael McBroom led the U.S. to a 1-2 finish in 7:49.96 followed by Connor Jaeger in second in 7:50.59. Cochrane placed third in 7:57.10. All three swam in the same heat.

Both MacLean and Cochrane are tuning up for the Commonwealth Games in July and Pan Pacific Championships in August.
