TORONTO — B.J. Penn made a basic purse of US$150,000 for his loss to Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald on the UFC’s weekend televised card in Seattle.

MacDonald earned $42,000, including a $21,000 win bonus, according to the Washington state department of licensing.

Such state purse figures do not usually tell the whole financial story since the UFC does not detail all of its bonuses.

Lightweight champion Benson (Smooth) Henderson, for example, was listed as making $78,000 for his successful title defence against Nate Diaz ($50,000).

Former light-heavyweight champion Mauricio (Shogun) Rua collected $175,000 for his loss to Alexander (The Mauler) Gustafsson. The rising Swedish star made $60,000, including as $30,000 win bonus.

An unlikely big winner was bantamweight Scott (Young Guns) Jorgensen who walked away with $171,000, including bonuses of $20,500, for his win over John Albert — $65,000 for fight of the night and $65,000 for best submission.

Penn and Diaz were given 45-day medical suspensions (30 days with no contact) that extended indefinitely pending a doctor’s clearance.

Henderson and MacDonald got seven-day medical suspensions.
