Patrick to fight Head at UFC 149 in Calgary

Another Canadian has been added to UFC 149 in Calgary as Toronto’s Claude Patrick will take on James Head in a welterweight bout.

A source told Sportsnet Tuesday that verbal agreements were in place for the fight, which will appear on the undercard of the July 21 event at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the UFC’s first show in Alberta.

Patrick (14-2) is coming off a controversial split-decision loss to Brian Ebersole at UFC 140 in Toronto in December. The defeat snapped a 13-fight win streak, including his first three appearance in the Octagon.

Head (8-2) defeated Papy Abedi in his welterweight debut at the UFC’s Sweden debut last month. Prior to that he lost to Calgary’s Nick Ring in his organizational debut last June in Vancouver at UFC 131.

The matchup brings the total number of Canadians currently on the card to six, with the hometown Ring taking on Court McGee on the main card, and Ajax, Ont.’s Antonio Carvalho, Sudbury, Ont.’s Mitch Gagnon, Saskatoon’s Mitch Clarke and Ryan Jimmo of Edmonton all on the undercard.

The show is headlined by the featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo and Erik Koch.
