MONTREAL — UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and interim champion Carlos Condit are only days away from their UFC 154 main event title fight.
At a restaurant and night club called New City Gas in downtown Montreal, the two men sat down for a pre-fight press conference.
Here are some the notable quotes from GSP and Condit from Wednesday’s UFC 154 press conference…
GSP: I’ve changed a lot of things in my life and I’ve found the fire, a new fire I didn’t have before.
I’m the most prepared I could be and that ‘s why I’m so confident. … I didn’t cut corners.
You can be in shape but being in fighting shape is much different. …Now, I feel better than I was before I got hurt.
Condit: I feel like I have a much better chance this time around (compared to if the two would have fought last year).
I feel like (the Nick Diaz fight at UFC 143) showed an evolution to my game. … Hopefully in this fight I can bring a new version of that. … That’s was a great fight to get ready to fight Georges.
Georges is one of the best in the business when it comes to the takedown game … I have a well-rounded game and am comfortable anywhere the fight goes.
GSP: My goal in this fight is to be more opportunistic.
**GSP says he hopes to be the first to knockout Condit. The Natural Born Killer simply shakes his head.**
Condit: GSP’s fans can’t get in the Octagon with him.
The UFC never offered me any other fight (after winning the interim title). They wanted me to fight Georges.
Condit: A lot of the guys he’s fought
in the past are guys that want to be on top (and that was a mistake on their part).
GSP: I want to prove that I’m the best guy in the world, but on Saturday night we’re going to see what will happen.
I want to be the best at what I do. … I want to be back in the mix.
Condit: I thought less about Georges during this training camp than I did about improving myself. Sometimes I would watch tape on Georges … but it wasn’t this all-encompassing thing.
I don’t feel disrespected (amidst all the GSP vs. Anderson Silva talk) but first Georges and I have to get in there and mix it up.
I’m honoured to have the chance to compete against Georges. He’s where I want to be. All admiration aside, I’m coming to take that from him.
I’m not going to fight carelessly.
GSP: Now that hockey is in a lockout (the buzz around the event) is bigger. … All fights are big fights. It’s always dangerous. It’s always a big buzz, so I don’t focus on that.
Condit says the reason he hasn’t been knocked out has to do with skill and not luck.
GSP: I don’t wasn’t to finish a fight and think ‘I should have done this I should have done that.’
I’m always nervous for a fight, I’m always scared and that’s why I’m prepared. There’s nothing I can tell you I should have done to be better so I go in there with confidence.
Condit: The nerves come and go. I feel like I have less to lose (than GSP does).
Greg (Jackson) is a huge part of my camp and he was missed. It will be nice next time around having him back.
GSP: I’m 120 per cent. If i wasn’t I wouldn’t be here.
