It doesn’t appear as though Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal will be waiving his no-trade clause anytime soon.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Staal wants to remain with the Hurricanes.
Staal, whose name has been bandied about amid trade speculation, has one year remaining on his contract. His salary cap hit is $8.25 million – his actual salary next season will be $9.5 million – and he’s slated to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2015-16 season.
For the most part it has been a forgettable year on the ice for Staal – he’s on pace for his worst season statistically since his rookie campaign – however with a goal Saturday against the St. Louis Blues he has now scored in six of his last seven games. The goal against the Blues was his 302nd career tally, which is second best in Hurricanes franchise history behind Ron Francis and his 382 goals.
Staal, 30, was selected second overall by the Hurricanes in the 2003 NHL Draft and has spent his entire 806-game career with the franchise.
