Maletta leads IceDogs over Colts in shootout win

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Jordan Maletta forced overtime with a goal at 13:42 of the third period, then scored the winner in the ninth round of the shootout as the Niagara IceDogs slipped past the visiting Barrie Colts 4-3 on Thursday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Mikkel Aagaard and Josh Ho-Sang also scored for the IceDogs (36-26-4), who have won three games in a row, while Anthony DiFruscia added two assists.

Cordell James, Andrew Mangiapane and Kevin Labanc supplied the scoring for the Colts (41-23-3), who failed to pick up a fourth straight victory.

Niagara’s Brandon Hope made 26 saves through regulation and extra time, as well stopping 8-of-9 shooters in the shootout. Mackenzie Blackwood kicked out 36 shots for Barrie.

IceDogs defenceman Blake Siebenaler was assessed a match penalty for slew footing at 10:54 of the second period.

Both clubs went 1-for-7 on the power play

OTTERS 7 SPITFIRES 4

WINDSOR, Ont. — Alex DeBrincat had a pair of goals and Dylan Strome scored once and added three helpers as Erie beat the Spitfires for its eighth win in a row.

Kyle Maksimovich, Mason Marchment, Nicholas Baptiste and Remi Elie also scored for the Otters (48-14-4) while Connor McDavid tacked on three assists. Devin Williams made 26 saves for the win.

Trevor Murphy, Lucas Venuto and Jamie Lewis supplied the offence for Windsor (24-38-4), which is on a nine-game skid. Alex Fotinos stopped 31-of-36 shots in defeat.

BATTALION 5 67’s 2

NORTH BAY, Ont. — Jake Smith made 22 saves and Mathew Santos’s goal at 18:42 of the first stood up as the winner as the Battalion toppled Ottawa.

Ray Huether, Brett McKenzie, Ryan Kujawinksi and Nick Moutrey also scored for North Bay (35-20-11).

Trent Mallette struck twice for the 67’s (36-25-5), who got a 31-save outing from Leo Lazarev.

PETES 4 WOLVES 2

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — Greg Betzold had two goals and an assist and Matthew Mancina made 33 saves as the Petes snapped a five-game slide by doubling up Sudbury.

Josh MacDonald and Josh Maguire also found the back of the net for Peterborough (26-34-6).

Jacob Harris scored once for the Wolves (12-52-2) and assisted on a goal from Brody Silk. Troy Timpano turned away 34-of-37 shots in a losing cause.
